Managed-futures methods: practical questions

Answers about trend rules, the historical reference, volatility sizing, imported data and research-provider inquiries.

No. This is a research-methods publication, not a fund, managed account or trade-execution service. Its tools are educational calculations with inspectable assumptions. The featured Vector Ridge profile is a promotional introduction to a research provider, not evidence that a particular managed-futures mandate or investment product is available.

Is this a managed-futures programme?

No. This is a research-methods publication, not a fund, managed account or trade-execution service. Its tools are educational calculations with inspectable assumptions. The featured Vector Ridge profile is a promotional introduction to a research provider, not evidence that a particular managed-futures mandate or investment product is available.

To evaluate an actual programme, request its legal and operational structure, applicable registration information, instrument universe, measurement conventions, risk controls and the terms of the offered service. A founder's biography can be relevant context, but it is not a substitute for those documents.

Does the historical comparison identify a winner?

No. It compares directional states and the turnover implied by changing those states under a fixed rule. It deliberately does not calculate investment returns. A lower turnover count can reduce a specified linear cost proxy, but without an execution model and contract-specific data it cannot establish a better risk-adjusted investment.

The study's 70.4% all-rule agreement means that three definitions produce the same state on 176 of 250 assessed observations. It is not a win rate, a forecast-success rate or the probability of a profitable next trade. The denominator is a set of reference observations, not closed positions.

Why are negative levels allowed?

The level-based rules use differences and arithmetic means, not logarithms or percentage changes. They can therefore accept finite negative and zero reference levels within the stated bounds. Acceptance by the parser does not establish that a series has the right contract identity or economic interpretation for a proposed study.

A failed CSV import does not replace the last valid input. Dates must be ordered and unique, every level must be explicit, and the selected windows must leave enough observations to assess. Files remain in the browser session; the publication does not upload them.

Can I use the sizing output as an allocation?

The worksheet does not evaluate suitability or forecast realized volatility. It converts assumptions into capped notional exposure, whole contracts and cost arithmetic. Its cash illustration is incomplete by design and should not be mistaken for the maximum amount that a real position could require.

Before applying an implementation process, establish actual contract specifications, margin arrangements, available capital, execution conventions and applicable professional advice. The worksheet helps expose missing assumptions; it cannot supply an undocumented service, permission or account constraint.

Research checkpoints

  • Keep the calculation scope and evidence identity explicit.
  • Use the linked methods and source records before drawing an implementation conclusion.
